Heathcare in the US:
We don’t have a problem with the US healthcare SYSTEM, we have a problem with the PEOPLE in the system.
Obesity is measured as those people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or over.
For me, 5’10” 162lbs, I would have to gain over 50 lbs! I think about how much work it would be to carry
around (2) 25 lb dumbbells all day, every day!
Compared to other countries in the
world, here is how the percentage of “Obese” people in the US stacks up to a few countries touted as having better
healthcare than the US:
- United
States of America: 34%. In 1980 this number was 15%!
- Canada: 14%
- Australia: 22%
- UK: 23%

The
point is that if you took a completely random population of Americans and placed them in the country of your choice, say any
17M people swapped with Australia, their healthcare system would completely FAIL.
There is a tremendous amount of political
debate ongoing in the US right now with huge cost implications. Trillions of dollars are at stake. Electronic medical
records are not going to solve this problem.
I have not heard a single thing focused on changing our eating and exercise
habits. What if we invested in nationalizing the YMCA’s, for example, made membership free and paid for this with
a $25 per pack cigarette tax and a $1 fast food tax?
We all need to take personal ownership of our own health before we
cast blame on the healthcare system. Look in the mirror and the reflection: What can YOU do better?
